The corporation, Omni-Tek, had taken a lease out on a planet called Rubi-Ka. It was terraformed and settled. Notum being the main product, and Omni-Tek controls it all.
The rebels, Clans, were opposed to Omni Tek control and the way the corporation treated its workers. There were wars all over the planet, cities were reduced to little more than rubble, the Clans took some land away from Omni control, cities like Old Athens, but the costs were incredible.
The Neutral alliance wanted nothing to do with either side of the conflict and formed their own communities in and around Newland, Borealis, and Stret West Bank.
The pre launch party was lively and well attended by both Funcom staff and some press as well as fans. Fan site reps, including one eager fellow from Moscow, were given the opportunity to party with the staff and everyone enjoyed a fantastic night at a very scenic, old, bar theatre in the east end of Oslo. There was music, the decor was very much in tune with the look of the game, gritty, urban, oil cans turned into tables to rest your drink on, the works. All to get people into the mind set of the game and it's futuristic setting.
And then it came, opening day, servers up and ready for the people to join in. Did I say ready?
There were big problems, very big, from the start. Anarchy Credits lived up to its name. The billing didn't work, people weren't able to get their accounts going, the sign up page broke down. There were just many more people than Funcom expected maybe? Maybe. It has to be said that Anarchy Online must have had the worst launch in MMO history. The support team worked the next few weeks doing double shifts, each and every one of them, 16 hours a day, to try to get everyone the help they needed. Every one of the Funcom staff worked even harder than before to get all the problems sorted out, to get their customers into game and playing and, most of all, enjoying the game. It was a mad, mad, world at Funcom HQ but the problems did get solved.
Not that there haven't been bumps in the road since but from launch until now, 6 years later, Anarchy Credits has survived and grown. From that launch there has been one "Booster pack“ , 3 expansion packs, and a new twist in that you can now also play the "Classic“ version for free, and a lot more.
