A new enemy appears
The release of Alien Invasion will mark a significant change in the everyday life for the citizens of Rubi-Ka. Not only will the entire face of the planet be greatly changed with player-made towns popping up, the players are also forced to deal with the looming threat of aliens invaders. The exact reason for the alien presence have, so far (and on purpose), been shrouded in secrecy. We want the players to find out the exact reasons for the invasion through playing, as we believe this will make it more fun, interesting and rewarding to search for answers. In the end however, we are confident that the entire story of the AO universe will come together in an epic and intriguing way, with the aliens playing an important part.
Art approach
One of the greatest challenges for Anarchy's new Art Director, Oivind Steensen, and his team of graphic artists was to create a believable and interesting alien species without falling into the trap of using typical "grey" figures with large eyes, big heads and small slender bodies. Seeing the obsession humanity has for aliens, it's almost impossible to make a graphical look that is completely unique since thousands of thousands of films, books, TV series, websites and games have portrayed them in one form or the other over the years.
We are nevertheless very serious about keeping our artistic integrity, as we believe this to be one of the distinct strengths of Funcom. With cooperation among our art director, several artists, game director and marketing, we spent a lot of rounds in reaching a look we believe is unique to Anarchy Credits. The goal was to portray the aliens as technologically advanced in a biological way, while having them perceived as powerful and awe inspiring. Seeing a gigantic mothership hovering over a city should instill fear and anxiety in the player, and likewise, seeing hordes of aliens swarming out of landers, bent on destruction, should make your trigger finger react nervously. ;)
So far, we have received lots of really positive comments on the look and art approach, and as expected, the views on what they look like seem to change for each beholder. Take a look for yourself and make up your mind, and notice that for the first time, we are fully revealing the main force of the alien infantry and their units.
